1. Mam Tor (The Shivering Mountain)
2. Casting The Runes
3. The Ghost of Heritage
Serving as a promo for the forthcoming album “Ghost of Heritage” this three track demo is the debut release from English band Winterfylleth. The name is a modern approximation of Winterfylleþ meaning October or specifically and traditionally the rising of the Winter full moon which fell on the 26th October 2007.
The line-up includes a member of British doom act Atavist and for future recordings will include a member of Wodensthrone. The production is excellent for a first demo, it’s assumed it was studio recorded.
Although an acoustic guitar is used briefly, their approach to ‘folk’ Black Metal lies in the electric guitars and vocals rather than any traditional instruments (Kroda etc). Hate Forest (and to a related but lesser degree Drudkh) would be a closer comparison. Thick warm textured guitars that paint wild and epic British landscapes. Creating a grandiose depiction of the English countryside. The vocals are cavernous and hoarse with additional choral chants. These chants work very well.
Lyrically some of the form comes from Old English folk verse although the emphasis is clearly a modern perspective looking back and condemning the current trend of this country.
The CDr “Rising of the Winter Full Moon” clearly presents the bands intentions. These three tracks will be re-recorded for the album so acquiring a copy of the original versions is recommended. With a promised stronger injection of ‘folk’ into the next releases Winterfylleth may begin to make their mark in a genre almost exclusively east of England.
